What do I need to know about sensor taps?

First of all, you should consider who will be using your sensor tap and how it will be used. There are quite a few options to choose from, both forward and downward facing sensors, different styles and different sizes, not all of which will be suitable for your setting.  To help you decide, all the installation and product drawings are available on our website, we are also happy to make recommendations based on our experience.

A sensor tap has a different working mechanism to a normal tap and will behave differently to what you are used to, they do take a little while to get used to.Our taps are also water saving and the flow may be less than a standard tap.


Are sensor taps difficult to install?

No not at all. But there are a couple of things you need to know before you start. Most of our taps are single-feed only and require a separate mixing valve to premix the water. We can supply an isolating mixing valve which is compatible with our solenoid control box (ET-HCV) if required.  This acts as an isolating valve as well as regulating water pressure and temperature.

You must make sure that all pipe work is flushed adequately, particularly in new builds or where lines have been disrupted. Components of sensor taps are particularly susceptible to debris and will require a more thorough flushing than a standard plumbing fixture. Failure to flush the lines adequately, will result in blocked or leaking valves (check/solenoid) or a tap dripping soon after installation and is NOT covered by the Enviro-Tech warranty.

All our products come with an installation manual, these are also available on our website and we recommend that you consult a qualified Plumber to discuss your installation prior to making any purchase.

Can sensor taps be used with stainless steel basins?

Accessories such as sinks, basins, mirrors and tiles are made from many different materials and finishes, some of which may trigger an infra-red sensor to act abnormally.Strong light can also interfere with operation. This is not a product fault.  Some tap models, especially those with downward facing sensors, are more susceptible to interference than others and are not recommended for use with stainless steel sinks or for use in particularly bright environments.

It is recommended that you make sure that your accessory choice is compatible with infra-red technology and that you read the product literature and specifications in detail before making your purchase.

Do you have hardwired options?

Yes, most of our models can either be solely battery operated or mains powered with batteries acting as back-up in case of power failure.  If using as battery only, we would expect that with good quality batteries (4 x AA), your tap will operate for around 110,000 cycles, between 1-3 years depending on use.

The sensor will flash to indicate that the batteries are low and need to be replaced, batteries are housed within the control box and are easily changed.

I'm looking for something different, do your taps only come in Chrome?

The standard finish on most of our taps is polished chrome.  Polished chrome is a classic and timeless finish which is durable, easy to clean and maintain and matches well with other fixtures and accessories.

The current trend for alternative finishes has led us to develop other finish options, including a from stock, matt-black finish on our two most popular models. We do also have a stainless steel option which would be suitable for most settings, (ET2-97) and our kitchen mixer is a brushed stainless steel finish.

We are also offering other bespoke finishes on a special order basis.  These finishes are manufactured to the highest standards and will surely add interest and impact to your setting.

Before selecting an alternative finish, we would advise that you think about how and by whom your tap will be used and consider the following:

Black finishes - dark colours can show water and soap marks and can be more difficult to maintain over time.

Brass - can lose its lustre over time.

Shiny Copper - may require a little more maintenance to maintain the high shine finish.

I'm looking for a sensor activated toilet, what are my options?

We have two different models for you to choose from, the ET4-40 and the ET4-7.  The latter is ideal for all shared bathroom environments including, hospitality, health, and education, commercial and public areas.  The ET4-40 is the very latest in hands free technology with an in wall cistern and is highly suitable for homes, apartments, hotels, hospitality and work spaces.

A minimum dynamic water pressure of at least 350Kpa is crucial for effective operation of the ET4-7 models. These valves have a high water rating and only use a small amount of water to flush, which is why the pressure of the water is so important. We strongly recommend that the 4 star flush valves be installed with an approved 4 star WELS toilet suite. If you are retrofitting paired with a toilet of a lessor star rating, we suggest you use our 3 star WELS alternative (ET4-7.3). We would recommend that to consult a qualified Plumber to discuss your installation prior to any purchase.

What do I need to know about your urinal flush valves?

ET3-10 infrared urinal flush valve comes as standard with an ABS plastic faceplate. We recommend that if vandalism could be an issue for your installation, select the ET3-12 which has a more robust stainless steel access face plate. Alternatively, consider installing the ET3-M which has all parts concealed.

The ET3-M flush valve is our most water efficient model with Smart Demand flush and a 6 star WELS rating. There are no visible parts, the valve is usually concealed in the ceiling, so is ideal if vandalism could be an issue. The sensor is simply installed to the rear underside of the ceramic urinal and detects the vibration of liquid flowing on the urinal surface. It will not flush unless it detects liquid, so it cannot be set off by movement in the bathroom in front of the urinal.

The ET3-R is connected directly to mains water supply, the flush valve and sensor unit is ceiling mounted and is capable of flushing either of two installed urinals. Also suitable for trough urinals up to 1.6m long and stainless steel urinals.

I've been told that high-vis clothing can interfere with sensor products, is that true?

Yes, in our experience, high-vis clothing can cause sensors in some tap and urinal flush valves to activate. Prolonged exposure of the sensors to high-vis clothing can cause the sensor to malfunction and may cause permanent damage. If high-vis clothing is a factor in your installation, please get in touch to discuss your situation, we are happy to make recommendations on product suitability.

Do you have a Showroom?

Our testing facilities, warehousing and distribution centres are in QLD and Kapiti. Planning is underway for showrooms in Brisbane and Auckland, but in the meantime, we are happy to call on you to show samples and discuss our products. What is the lead time for your products?

Generally, we hold plentiful stock across our range, and usually dispatch order within 24-48 hrs of an order/payment being received. However when large back to back orders for a particular model arise unexpectedly, we can sell out of it. If you have had a quote from us it is a good idea to let us know (a quick email will do) as soon as possible stating what and approximately when you will likely be needing it.
